Charlotte Penman

Charlotte Penman has always been intrigued by charms, having collected them as a child in Hong Kong and on her travels. She is fascinated by their ability to bring a little magic into daily life with an allure that can range from the playful to the glamorous.

A range of charm necklaces and earrings are featured in the collection in sterling silver, 14ct rolled or plated gold. Charms include the Irish Claddagh, a symbol of love and friendship, the African Cowrie Shell, believed to attract wealth and prosperity, the Rose Bud a symbol of youthful love and the Key to Heaven, which will be available exclusively at Workshop from April.

If you are after a more sophisticated piece to enhance your winter wardrobe, a variety of refined chain necklaces and bracelets combined with beautiful gemstones are also featured in the collection. From carved red coral chandelier earrings to steel grey labradorite that shines an iridescent blue in the light. These gemstones not only look good, but are also believed to lift your spirits and anyone who wears gems will notice the effect they can have.

Gemstones are fascinating and possess so many unique qualities. The process they go through is a journey in itself. Found in exotic locations from Madagascar to Alaska, from the Czech Republic to New Mexico, each gemstone has its own story. Charlotte Penman loves to work with them, combining them with gold and silver to create new forms that enhance their natural beauty.

Charlotte Penman's influences are a fusion of vintage style, 20th century fashion icons, crown jewellery, dreamy Balearic beaches, the pacific, raw nature and contemporary design.

She has studied Fine Arts at Elam and jewellery making in Japan, as well as at Auckland's Workshop 6. She hand picks her gemstones from around the world and uses high quality chains and findings to create pieces that reflect her unique style. Her work has been profiled in local shows and exhibitions and has been seen in Pulp, Remix, Fashion Quarterly and a MOMA art video (Museum of Modern Art, in NY) among others.

All pieces are handcrafted at her Auckland studio. Her work can be found at Workshop/Helen Cherry's Vulcan Lane, Newmarket and Wellington stores, at Tessuti, Macy's Home and Jetset Bohemian in Auckland and at Art galleries ZeaYou in Taupo and Mad House in Rotorua.
