Other Information

Melbourne is known for its too-cool-for-school bars, city laneways and changeable weather, but more recently, Melbourne has established itself as one of the most stylish and fashion conscious cities in Australia. Imogen Baratta met with the Rosie Bucciarelli, the brains behind one of Melbourne’s most promising labels Rosaria.

Rosie Bucciarelli of Rosaria lists Cate Blanchett, Scarlett Johansson and Princess Mary as her style icons. Which is no surprise, since her designs have been described as sophisticated, elegant and oozing old style glamour.

“My favourite designers are Elsa Schiaparelli, Roberto Cavalli, Armani and Akira Isogawa – anyone whose clothes are timeless and sophisticated.”

Bucciarelli says despite her understated, chic look, the design process is very involved, beginning with a simple sketch.

“I spread my fabric swatches, scrapbook and sketchbook across my desk and begin drawing. I sketch as many ideas as I can, then leave it for a while and come back to it, make some changes, then leave it again and so on. It’s a never-ending process,” she says.

Like many designers, Bucciarelli finds that ensuring her collection is commercially viable is the biggest challenge.

“Managing cash flow is difficult, as well as doing everything in the business from the design to the financials to the sales to the delivery and so on!”

Although starting a business requires perseverance and an unshakeable faith in your product, Bucciarelli believes the rewards far outweigh the sacrifices.

“When I placed third at the Cox Plate Fashions on the Field competition last year I was absolutely speechless! Plus my Autumn Winter range is just about to hit the stores (in April) and my Spring Summer collection will debut at the L’Oreal Fashion Festival in September. There is so much to look forward to!” she exclaims.

Since Bucciarelli moves in such glamorous circles, I ask if she has made any fashion faux pas herself. “ Well, a long time ago I wore a hyper colour tee – the ones where the colour changes with the heat of your hands ….” She laughs. “I can’t believe I just told you that!”
