Background
I began the Tamsin Cooper label in 2003 from my home in Arrowtown with just a small range of women's wallets. Since then my range has grown to include an extensive range of fashion accessories, clothing and sleepwear, which over the last couple of years has gained national media acclaim.
The birth of my son Hugo in 2003 and a move from Dunedin to Queenstown launched my career as a designer. I missed working with the thriving Dunedin fashion and arts industries and I realised when I moved to Queenstown that to remain in the fashion industry I would have to work for myself.
Drawing on experience and knowledge gleaned from my previous jobs as Arts Advisor and then Business Advisor for Film & Fashion for Dunedin City gave me confidence to create my own label. Geographical isolation and the sheer beauty of it has given me determination, a point of difference and a clear vision. The creative isolation, so to speak, gave me the drive!
The stunning environment of my home and the breathtaking views of snowy mountains, deep blue lakes and the vivid changing colours of each season are truly inspirational. Outdoor living and adventure pursuits are a focus for most people living in the Wakatipu Basin and thus the fashion in general is casual. Wearing a dress when I first moved here usually provoked comment and sometimes still does! This world of practical dress increased my desire to design exotic and glamorous articles. A fashionista's personal rebellion I guess!
The Tamsin Cooper label is a family affair and I work closely with my husband a graphic designer. I also work very closely with the manufacturers of my designs who are a family based company in Vietnam. Working with Vietnam is challenging and amazing, their talent and skill for hand embroidery and beadwork is brilliant and the quality of their work sensational. Producing my designs using such talented workmanship is why I believe my finished designs have so much spirit! Fair and ethical trading is essential to the way our company works and we donate a percentage of the profits from each article to a respected Vietnamese aid organisation.
